David Ferrer dumps Facundo Bagnis in second round – Copa Claro 2012
Top seed David Ferrer moved to his third quarterfinal of the season, ousting World Number 162 Facundo Bagnis in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 in the second round at the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires on Wednesday. The Spaniard, Ferrer, took an hour and 17 minutes to
outclass his opponent at the clay courts of Buenos Aires Lawn Tennis Club.
Ferrer and Bagnis were unable to hold their serve on a number of occasions in the first set. They exchanged a couple of breaks in the first six games, equalising the score 3-3. After that, Ferrer clinched three straight games and won the set 6-3. The Spaniard
returned quite well, capturing nine of the 17, first and five of the nine second ones.
Ferrer needed a single break of serve in the second set, serving it out 5-4. The Spaniard was flawless on his first serves, converting all 13 of them into points. The 29-year-old performed better than his opponent in all but one department of the game. Bagnis
fired three aces in response to only one by Ferrer. Though, the Argentinean could not succeed in putting away one of the three break threats he faced in the second set.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Ferrer said, "It was a tough match and Bagnis made things difficult for me. He missed in the key points and I took my chances. The crowd cheered me up even though I was facing a local player."
David did not feature in the last edition of the Copa Claro. In his latest appearance here, the former World Number 4 reached the title match, losing to then World Number 22 Juan Carlos Ferrero in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 in the final of 2010.
The Spaniard is drawn to face World Number 263, Fernando Gonzalez of Chile, in the quarterfinals. Gonzalez routed Spaniard Albert Ramos in straight sets 7-6(6), 7-6(5) in the second round.
Ferrer trails 4-5 in the head-to-head record against the Chilean. However, in their last meeting, the Spaniard beat Gonzalez in three sets 6-7(4), 6-0, 6-4 in the semi-final at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in 2010.
Gonzalez said about Ferrer, "He's a great player. I've played against him a lot of times and it's going to be tough, especially on this court where he feels so good."
Ferrer is in top form at this tournament. The right-hander crushed the Argentinean Andres Molteni in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round.
