David Ferrer dumps Juan Carlos Ferrero in 3rd round – Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011
Spanish world No.5, David Ferrer curled away a winner as he played his 3rd
round match at the Shanghai Rolex Masters 2011, against former world No.1, Juan Carlos Ferrero, on Thursday, 13th October. Clashing out for two hours, Ferrer bomb-shelled the veteran with a marvellous comeback winning 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 moving into
the quarterfinal.
Playing at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena, Shanghai, China Ferrer proved worthy of his reputation as the fittest player on court as he came back a set down to win the 3rd round.
Starting off first, Ferrer opened up the starter serving first. However, the former world No.1 capitalized and broke world No.5 in early in the set. Serving out his opening serve, Ferrero took out game 2 and led the set 2 game
to zero. In best of his form this season, the veteran Spaniard broke compatriot for the second time in 3 games, 3-0, charging in and took the lead.
Winning his fourth consecutive game, Ferrero bulldozed the higher ranked opponent, 4-0, and switching the serve back to Ferrer. With his first win of the match, Ferrer finally pulled of a game, however, could not cut back the lead
any further that 4-1.
Serving out next, the world No.68 shattered his compatriot winning game 6 and breaking world No.5 in the final game, 6-1, pocketing the first set and led the match, 1-0.
Prevailing in the first set, Ferrero started off serving first in set 2 and served out the first game, 1-0. World No.5 replied with a winner, 1-1, and stood to return again. Rallying out the next games on respective serves the
two levelled up at 2-2, 3-3 and 4-4 and then at 5-5.
Seemingly moving towards a tiebreaker, set 2 ended earlier as Ferrer broke the former world No.1, in game 11 and served out game 12 winning the set, 7-5, and levelling up the match scores, 1-1.
With the decider set on its way, Ferrero continued to serve first thundering away with the first game, 1-0. The 29-year-old levelled up and broke the former world No.1 next to charge the set, 2-1. Bagging a winner on his serve,
Ferrer stepped on the pedal and led the set 3-1.
Ferrero did cut the lead to 3-2, however, could not break back to level up.  Serving next, Ferrer outgunned the veteran compatriot with a super serve-break-serve ending the decider with a triple match point winner, 6-2.
Through to the quarterfinal of the 2011 Shanghai Rolex Masters, Ferrer now plays American world No.15, Andy Roddick for a spot in the last four.
