David Ferrer eager to bag a Grand Slam trophy next season – Tennis News
Currently holding the fifth spot in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Spain’s David Ferrer is very keen to get his hands on a Grand Slam trophy in the next year. The 29-year-old
has cited that he is labouring extremely hard to maintain his sublime form and keep his winning impetus to bag his maiden Major title in the 2012 ATP season.
Ferrer will start off the proceedings of his next season’s campaign from Abu Dhabi, where he will be a part of the glorious exhibition tournament, the Mubadala World Tennis Championships. The event featuring the top class players
of the world will be held at the Abu Dhabi International Tennis Complex inside the Zayed Sports City from 29th of December.
The Spanish number two will play his first exhibition matchup against the world number six, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France on the opening day of the $250,000 winner-takes-all tournament. Ferrer and Tsonga have already met once in
the 2011 ATP season campaign and the head-to-head series between the two is levelled at 1-1. Their last meeting was held in the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships, where Tsonga took down the world number five in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(1), to
reach the quarter-finals of the grand Slam event.
Ferrer believes that the Mubadala World Tennis Championships is a perfect event to take off the next year’s professional tennis season. The Spaniard finished the current year with an impressive winning record of 59-19, claiming
two ATP championship titles also. The world number five is still to win a Grand Slam event but he is determined to end his drought in the coming year.
“It is the best option to start in the competition,” said the Spaniard about the exhibition event in Abu Dhabi.
Ferrer stunned everyone with his memorable performances at the circuit ending grand finale, the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, in London, outplaying then world number three Andy Murray and the world number one Novak Djokovic in
the round robin matches. He lost to the eventual champion, Roger Federer, in the semi-final of the mega event but the 29-year-old desires to keep on his winning roll in the coming season.
"I' m working a lot to try to keep this level, but is difficult because the other players are very good,” said Ferrer.
No doubt Ferrer is one of the finest tennis players in the world but at the age of 29, the Spaniard will have to make a whole lot of effort to clinch a Grand Slam title in the year 2012.
