David Ferrer enters the list of Top-10 title winners from Spain – Tennis News
Spanish players are unbeatable at the clay courts and world number six, David Ferrer, confirmed the hypothesis by gobbling up his third successive title in Acapulco on Saturday. He outfoxed his fellow compatriot, Fernando Verdasco,
in straight sets to claim the title. It was a world class performance from the top seed Spaniard, who never looked to be troubled at all throughout the tournament.
With this triumph, Ferrer clinched his fourteenth title of his career and became the tenth Spaniard to win that number of titles in a professional career; of course on top of the list is the superhuman Spanish number one, Rafael
Nadal, with 46 titles to date.
Spanish history is not rich with sports but they are currently leading the world in all major sports which includes tennis, football and cycling. They have produced such eye-startling performers in all these categories that they
have sometimes faced frustrated allegations and the recent example of that is the French media’s cheap dope claims on Spanish players.
However, there are few players who have made a name for themselves in the world of tennis. The ninth most title winner from Spain is the Alberto Berasategui and he equals the tally with Ferrer and Sergi Bruguera. Emilio Sanchez
Vicario is another hero who won fifteen titles in his professional career.
World number 48, Juan Carlos Ferrero, who just turned 32-years-old in February, has won sixteen titles in his professional career and he is levelled with Jose Higueras; another tennis icon of his time. Davis Cup Captain of Spain,
Alex Corretja, has won seventeen titles and is ranked number four in the list of total tiles won by a Spanish player.
Carlos Moya is the third player in the list with twenty career titles to his name. He recently won a champions tour at Delray Beach as well. On top of him is the another legendary tennis icon, Manuel Orantes, who won 33 titles
in his career and is ranked just below the former world number one, Rafael Nadal.
It is not a rich history compared to other countries just like Serbia or Russia who have multiple players winning over 30 titles their careers but they are gearing up and registering records in this era. Ferrer was ecstatic to
have achieved that landmark and entered the list of top ten players for most titles. It is probably a high time that he claims a Grand Slam title and ends his career on a high-note.
