David Ferrer gusts away Lukasz Kubot into the last eight - Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, ousted the Pole age-fellow, Lukasz Kubot, in the second round battle of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel tournament on Wednesday. He completed the task in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, taking an hour and
15 minutes.
The 54th ranked Pole had faced the Spaniard before in the Final of Warta Cup 2001 but since then they have not encountered each other on the tennis court. This battle was technically a first chance for the Pole to level
the head-to-head scores after a decade.
It was a tight battle at the start, with Ferrer trying hard to earn an early breakpoint to stamp his authority. He had his opponent under pressure on a couple of occasions inside the first six games but couldn’t finish off the
task successfully.
Finally, he managed to sneak away with a break in the seventh game and registered a lead of 4-3. He further enhanced his position in the set with another comprehensive serve hold to push the scores to 5-3. Kubot was under the cosh
and had to hold serve to keep the set alive but he failed to do so; ending up trailing a set down.
The second set was not much different from the opening one, except the top seed Spaniard breaking serve in the sixth game to take a lead of 4-2. He kept that lead intact for the rest of the match and made sure he made no unforced
errors to keep the pressure on the Pole.
It was a monumental task for the Pole to defeat the top seed from that stage and he wasn’t skilled enough to encounter the forceful returns of his opponent. Ferrer eased himself to another win and progressed to the quarter-final
stage of the tournament.
In a post-match interview, Ferrer stated, “Today I played a good match. I usually really feel good playing here in Acapulco; it is a tournament I really enjoy coming back to. Tomorrow against Pablo I expect a tough match, he is
playing well, with confidence and I will have to play my best.”
It seems like the Spaniard is enjoying his time at Acapulco and probably hunting his first ever Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) this season. He is up against the world number 50, Pablo Andujar, who capsized the fifth-seeded
German contender, Florian Mayer, to make it to the last eight. It is going to be an exciting contest.
