David Ferrer joins the world top four for Barclays ATP World Tour Finals – Tennis News
World Number 5, David Ferrer, defeated Juan Carlos Ferrer to place a berth in the quarterfinals of Shanghai Rolex Masters and at the same time qualified for the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. The Spanish International is the fifth player to qualify for the tournament and he now joins the likes of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Roger Federer who have already qualified for the tournament.
Barclays ATP World Tour Finals will be hosted in the famous O2 Arena of London and would feature the world’s top eight elite singles and doubles players who will contest for the grand season-end title. All these players would at-least play three matches in the round-robin and the top 4 players would march into the knock-out semi-final stage of the tournament.
Ferrer showed his delight on qualifying for this mega event. He expressed his excitement to the media in the following words “This is what I have been fighting for all year. I have had a great season with a lot of wins and I can't wait to return to London. It is such a great event and it is so special to be among the top 8 players once again. The atmosphere is incredible there.”
Valencia resident, Ferrer, has qualified for this tournament for the third time and this is his consecutive second appearance in the tournament. In 2007, he had a dream run throughout the tournament; undefeated in the robin-round and lost just one set on his way to the grand finale. In the final, his title dreams were shattered by then world number one, Roger Federer who won the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Maintaining his form, the Spanish International is enjoying a good run this year as well. In January, he defeated David Nalbandian in Auckland to clinch the title. In February, he defeated Nicolas Almagro to clinch the Acapulco title. He lost to Nadal in the finals twice in April, once in Monte Carlo and once in Barcelona. He also lost the final to Swede Robin Soderling in Bastad in July. He reached the semi-final of the 2011 Australian Open after upsetting compatriot and then world number 1, Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal match.
