David Ferrer jumps to number seven in the World
The Spaniard tennis ace David Ferrer is ranked number seven in the World according to the new South African Airways ATP list released on Monday. Ferrer, who made his debut on the tour back in 2000, is famously known as a clay court specialist.
The right hander, however, has had success on hard courts as well and had made his way into the semi final round at the NASDAQ-100 Open Men’s singles competition on two occasions in a row back in 2005 and 2006.
The professional tennis player from Spain also reached the final four at the year’s final Grand Slam, the United States Open back in 2007. Ferrer was also part of the Davis Cup team of his country that won the title battle back in 2008 and last year.
The 1.75 meters tall Ferrer achieved the seventh spot in the ATP list on Monday by virtue of his title victory at the 2010 Valencia Open 500 Men’s singles competition where he was seeded number four to win the crown. He started off his tournament’s campaign
with a three setter win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the opening round. The final match score was 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-3.
In the next round, the Valencia resident in his hometown event got the better of Teymuraz Gabashvili, a qualifier in two sets with a score line of 6-4, 6-1 for a place in the quarter final round.
In the final four stage, Ferrer surpassed Potito Starace 7-5, 6-4, to make his way into the semi final round in Valencia. He next dispatched the World number five, Robin Soderling, of Sweden in three sets to reach the title battle. The final match score
was 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The owner of nine singles ATP World tour titles, Ferrer, who achieved his career high ranking of World number four back in 2008, ousted Marcel Granollers in the final in straight sets to lift the crown in Valencia on Sunday. It also marked his second trophy
this season as he previously triumphed in Acapulco after knocking down Ferrero in two sets.
“It was a very tough match today. I returned very well, got one break in the second set. There were a lot of great rallies and tough points,” reflected David after the match on Sunday.
As a result of this win, the Spaniard has jumped to the number seven spot in the South African ATP list on Monday.
