David Ferrer labours past Matthew Ebden into the quarterfinal – Rakuten Open 2011
Third seeded Spaniard David Ferrer survived resilience posed by the Australian qualifier, Matthew Ebden after making a comeback win at the Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships 2011, an outdoor hard court tournament held at the
Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo, Japan. He registered a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Aussie to secure a quarter-final spot on Thursday.
World number five, Ferrer showed awe-inspiring skills to bounce back at the qualifier, ranked 132 places below him in the ATP rankings, on their first encounter.
23-year-old Ebden made a magnificent entry at the Ariake Coliseum as he found the desiderated break in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. Regardless of losing his serve in the proceeding game, the Aussie maintained his composure
to pluck in remaining serves and then clinched the opener with a 6-4 win in forty-two minutes after breaking the Spaniard’s serve again in the last game. He saved one out of two breakpoints faced and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to his
advantage.
The seed carved his way back on track and broke Ebden’s serve in the opening game. He then held following serves through exquisite angled shots and broke again in the fifth game to eventually go 5-1 up. Ferrer fished out easy points
in the eighth game to seal the equaliser with a 6-2 score line in thirty-six minutes. He held entire serves without facing any breakpoint and cashed in on both breakpoint chances to his advantage.
29-year-old Ferrer kept momentum floating into the final set and got the first blood in the opening game to have an early edge. He then glided 4-1 up before losing his serve in the sixth game. However, the Spaniard roared back
again to wipe out the next two games and pocketed the decider with a 6-2 score line again. He fended off one out of two breakpoints came across and capitalised on three out of four breakpoint chances to his advantage.
The seeded Spaniard will move ahead to face the seventh seeded Czech Radek Stepanek who also required three sets to overpower Swiss qualifier, Marco Chiudinelli with a 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-1 score line.
