David Ferrer leads Spain into the Davis Cup final – Tennis News
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, triumphed over the American number one, John Isner, in a four-set thriller at the Davis Cup World Group 2012 on Sunday. He formulated a 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victor over Isner to lead his side to the final showdown with
a 3-1 score line against United States.
The world number five, Ferrer made an epic comeback to outmuscle Isner in their fifth meeting. He not only avenged his loss at the BNP Paribas Masters in Paris but also improved to a 4-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head
2 Head Series against the world number 10.
The Spanish veteran stated in a courtside interview after stealing the spotlight for his nation:
“I’m very happy and this is a dream for me. Another Davis Cup final. We were here in Gijon at home, I won the last match and I won over John Isner who is a very, very good player.”
Isner made a convincing start at the Parque Hermanos Castro in Gijon, Spain. He suffered the first blood in the third game and fell at 1-3. However, the American recovered in the sixth game and took the set to a tie-breaker. He cruised to a 4-1 lead in it
before closing out the opener with a 7-6(3) win.
The 30-year-old unveiled his true colours in the following set. He cashed in two break chances and jumped to a 5-1 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the seventh game, Ferrer plucked his serve once again and clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
The Spanish star kept momentum sailing in the third set. He smoothly bagged his entire serves and got the breakthrough in the seventh game, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
Ferrer maintained his intensity in the proceeding set. He broke the American’s serve twice and leaped to a 5-1 lead. The Spaniard held his serve once more and clicked the set with a 6-2 success.
The American on the other hand failed to find his rhythm:
He reflected, “It is disappointing; the Spanish team in my opinion is just too good. They won the important points and it is a bit discouraging for me. I wanted to contribute in the ways that I did in the first two ties and I wasn’t able to do it. That is
a credit to [Nicolas] Almagro and Ferrer, they were both better than me.”
Isner bowed out to the Spanish number three, Nicolas Almagro, in marathon five sets in the second singles rubber.
