David Ferrer moves into quarters; knocks out Richard Gasquet – Australian Open 2012
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, cruised into the quarterfinals of the Australian Open tournament with an easy straight set win over the French, Richard Gasquet. The finals scores were 6-4, 6-4, 6-1, as Ferrer confirmed a spot
against the winner of the match between Novak Djokovic and Lleyton Hewitt.
The French tennis ace had a long history with the Spaniard, yet he was unable to find any loopholes in the game style of Ferrer. They played six matches before this contest and the Spaniard led the head-to-head tally by 5-1. Only
time when Ferrer bowed down to the French was way back in 2008 during the Rogers Masters contested in Toronto. Gasquet has been unable to exploit any more wins against Ferrer in the rest of the six encounters including the loss at the Australian Open match
on Monday.
It was a vigilant start to the match at both ends as no one wanted to lose an early break to give a lead to his competitor. After a cautious battle in the first eight games of the set, Ferrer pounded his opponent down in the ninth
game and successfully broke serve to take the vital lead. He capitalized on his serve to check the first set in his favour.
The momentum from the first set didn’t break and Spaniard continued to hammer his opponent. Gasquet failed to revert to the plan B and had no clue whatsoever about how to tackle this onslaught from his opponent. First three games
were bagged by the Spaniard that consisted of two successful serve breaks. Gasquet broke serve back to minimize the lead. In the eighth game, scores were levelled with another successful serve break from the French and attendants at the arena loved every bit
of this contest. Ferrer broke in the ninth game and held his serve in the next to name the second set to his name and increase the lead to two sets to nil.
It was just a matter of time for Ferrer to register an emphatic win over Gasquet. He spared just one game and broke serve thrice to register a successive set win in the third set. He moves into the quarters and looks set to demolish
anyone in his way of the Grand Slam title.
