David Ferrer on verge of surpassing Rafael Nadal in the ATP World Rankings – Tennis News
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, had a brilliant run in the 2012 ATP season and desires to sustain his winning impetus in the upcoming professional circuit. He is currently rated at number five in the South African Airways ATP
World Tour Rankings but has an excellent chance to regain his career-best ranking of world number four.
Ferrer is separated from the reigning fourth ranked player, Rafael Nadal, with the slightest of the margins and it is expected that he will be able to surpass the Spanish number one in the opening month of 2013 ATP season. Nadal
is currently having 6,690 ranking points in to hold the fourth spot, whilst Ferrer is right behind him with 6,505 points. A title victory in any season-opening tournament or a decent run in the Australian Open Grand Slam tournament will ensure Ferrer to become
the Spanish number one.
The 30-year-old Spaniard is drawing closer to the end of his professional career but his current form is absolutely ballistic. He finished the 2012 season with an impressive winning ratio of 76-15, bagging seven ATP World Tour
championship titles. It was one of the best seasons he had in his career but the ultimate glory is yet to come for Ferrer. He is still to win a Grand Slam title in his career and the upcoming season seems to be a perfect opportunity to end his long Major title
drought.
Ferrer will take off his 2013 campaign from the Heineken Open, an ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Auckland, New Zealand, where he will defend the title he won this year. The hard courts of Auckland will provide a good practice
ground for the Spanish hero to prepare for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open. If he manages to defend the rankings points at the Heineken Open and then made it to the quarter-final stages of the Grand Slam Down Under, he will
accumulate sufficient points to topple Nadal from the Spanish number one spot. On the other hand, Nadal is struggling to find his way back in the competitive tennis and less hopes are associated with him at the moment.
