David Ferrer ousts Andreas Haider-Maurer; moves into the semis – SkiStar Swedish Open 2011
Second seed Spaniard David Ferrer made significant headway into the tournament by defeating Austrian Andreas Haider-Maurer in an excellently executed two set win in Friday’s quarter final match of the 2011 SkiStar Swedish Open.
He now joins Nicolas Almagro, Tomas Berdych and Robin Soderling to complete the top four seeds of the tournament who will feature in the upcoming adrenaline charged semi finals.
David Ferrer has been in top form this season and his action packed performance against the likes of Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish of the US at the Davis Cup match a while back has surely boosted his confidence and performance. Ferrer
had earlier received a bye to the second round of the tournament and made a flamboyant entrance by defeating his compatriot Pere Riba in an easily managed two set haul. The 2007 titlist and currently world No. 6 is now steadfast on his way to regaining lost
glory and today’s win effectively dispelled rumours of fatigue which have been circling him since last week.
Positioned at No. 74, Austrian Haider-Maurer has performed exceptionally at the clay courts in Bastad. He previously won against Filippo Volandri and Mikhail Kukushkin in the preceding matches to reach the top eight in the tournament.
David Ferrer surprised Haider-Maurer right in the first game by successfully converting a breakpoint to his advantage. Haider-Maurer picked up his first and only game on Game 3 with the scores 3-1. Ferrer registered two breakpoints,
the first on game 5 and another on game 7, dealing a blow from which Haider-Maurer failed to recover. Ferrer gave away only 5 points on his serves and bagged 6 of the 9 serve points despite his low first serve percentage of 50%. The set went Ferrer’s way by
a huge margin and the score board stood at 6-1 at the set’s end.
The second set wasn’t a lot different from the first one and Ferrer stole the show from his opponent 6-1 again. Throughout the set Ferrer didn’t even face a single breakpoint while he registered two serve breaks devastating his
bleak opponent.
David Ferrer will now meet fellow Spaniard fourth seed Nicolas Almagro in his semi final match of the tournament. Almagro defeated the previously lucky Swede Michael Ryderstedt to secure his berth in the semis. Competition at the
Swedish Open is beginning to heat up!
