David Ferrer ousts Carlos Berlocq to third round of Barcelona Open
Fourth seed David Ferrer scored an extremely easy victory over qualifier Carlos Berlocq in his opening match at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, defeating his opponent in straight sets to reach the third round of the tournament. The Spanish tennis
pro defeated his Argentine opponent 6-2, 6-2, taking just over one hour and thirty minutes to dismiss the player. David Ferrer began his campaign at the prestigious ATP World Tour 500 Series with this victory, fresh off his title match run at the 2011 ATP
World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo.
David Ferrer established his position as the better player early during the match, committing just one double fault in the first set while his opponent made four such mistakes. Both players scored two aces, but Ferrer managed to defend himself against both
his break points while successfully converting two of four break point opportunities against Carlos Berlocq. The Argentine, who is currently ranked World Number 72, floundered against Ferrer and lost needless points, enabling his opponent to take the first
set with 59 per cent of the points played. At this point in the match, the score-line was 6-2 to David Ferrer.
The second set was similar to the first one as far the score is concerned. Both players did not score any aces, but Berlocq helped Ferrer’s cause by committing one more double fault. Once again, the Spanish sixth seed saved all of his break points and successfully
broke Berlocq twice out of three opportunities. Ferrer himself remained unbroken throughout the match. Points-wise, Ferrer scored even better in the second set by taking 60 per cent of the total points played. This helped him to win the set 6-2, ultimately
resulting in him setting up a winning score-line of 6-2, 6-2 against Carlos Berlocq. The Argentine qualifier did not have much of a chance during the match, and Ferrer capitalised on his position as the stronger player.
The Spanish Number 2 will be facing Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu in the third round of the clay tournament.
