David Ferrer ousts Igor Sijsling to enter round three – US Open 2012
Fourth seed, David Ferrer, got the better of the Dutch qualifier, Igor Sijsling, in straight sets at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Friday. He penned down a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(12) victory against the world number 78 to charge into the round of 32 at this final
of the four Grand Slam events held in Corona Park in Queens, New York City.
The Spanish number two fended off late fightback to oust Sijsling in their second battle against each other. After carving out the success in two hours and seven minutes, Ferrer improved to a 2-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals)
Head 2 Head Series against the Dutch and progressed into the third round at this major hard court event.
The 30-year-old assertively entered the Grandstand Stadium at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He brilliantly blocked all three breakpoints he came across and capitalised on two out of six break chances to seal the opener with a 6-2 win in under
half hour.
Ferrer perfected his ways towards the follow-up set. He swiftly swiped his entire serves without facing any hindrance and cashed in the lone break chance to clinch the set with a 6-3 score line. The Spaniard hammered nine winners and required 36 minutes
to inch towards the glory.
Ranked fifth in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Ferrer carried his momentum in the third set. He failed to block the only breakpoint he came across but capitalised on one out of six break chances to neutralise the effect. The set went
to a tie-breaker where the Spaniard edged past Sijsling and consequently clicked the set with a 7-6(12) success in 65 minutes.
On the whole, Ferrer manipulated a slightly higher first serve share of 56 per cent in contrast with the Dutch’s 54 per cent and exceptionally marked 51 out of 91 points on it. He also hammered 31 winners and spilled only 20 unforced errors.
Up next for Ferrer is the former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt. The Australian wild card entrant battled past Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller in a five-set thriller to set up this meeting.
