David Ferrer ousts Kevin Anderson in the first round – US Open 2012
Fourth seed, David Ferrer of Spain, put away some late threat from South Africa’s 6ft 8in tall player, Kevin Anderson, to beat him in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, 7-6(3) in the opening round of the US Open on Wednesday.
Ferrer is ranked fifth in the world but he received fourth seed due to the withdrawal of his compatriot, Rafael Nadal. Ferrer is Spanish number two for a long time now but he has always remained under the shadow of the 11-time
Grand Slam winner and former world number one, Rafael Nadal.
The Spaniard is a clay court specialist but made a solid start on the hard courts of Flushing Meadows in New York. He gave his best performance at this event five years ago, when he reached the last-four stage but lost to Novak
Djokovic.
This was Ferrer’s first win after beating Slovakia’s Blaz Kavcic in the second round of London Olympics. He was stunned by Kei Nishikori in the third round of the Mega event, did not play the Rogers Cup and lost to Switzerland’s
Stanislas Wawrinka in his first match at the Western & Southern Open.
In the latest match, Ferrer faced his towering opponent’s huge serves bravely and neutralised them with his solid returns.
The Spaniard did not allow Anderson to settle down in the encounter, earning an early break of serve and keeping his advantage till the end to capture it 6-4.
Unlike the opener, the second one was begun steadily by both players, as they held their serve in the opening four games to even out the proceedings at 2-2. However, Ferrer completed dominated the set, making double breakthrough
and clinching four back to back to win 6-2.
Third set was the most competitive one, as Ferrer and Anderson did not allow each other to snatch of break of serve till the end, holding their serves throughout to equalise the score at 6-6 and take it to a tie-breaker. The Spaniard
did not give any chance to Anderson after that, dropping just three points and sealing it 7-6(3).
Ferrer said, talking to the reporters after the match, "I feel good. It was not an easy match with Anderson. He's a really good player. He has a very strong first and second serve. I'm happy because I played well in my first round."
The Spanish star will play Igor Sijsling of the Netherlands in the round of 64.
