David Ferrer ousts Marcel Granollers in straight sets at Miami
Spanish tennis player David Ferrer took on compatriot Marcel Granollers in the fourth round of the 2011 Miami Masters. Defeating his opponent in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 Ferrer makes it to the quarterfinals of the event.
Ferrer, who is seeded sixth at the tournament, took just a little over an hour to end Granollers’s surprisingly long run at this year’s ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Miami event. Despite the fact that Granollers has the advantage
of age over 28-year-old Ferrer, the World Number 6 barely seemed to break a sweat in his third match at the Miami event.
Granollers and Ferrer both scored the same number of aces during the match, firing off three each over the course of an hour. However, Ferrer managed to save both his break points while driving Granollers to break point six times
during the game. Although the 24-year-old player made an effort to defend himself, he could only fend off two of these break points. This resulted in his serve being broken four times to give Ferrer the advantage. In addition to this, David Ferrer also managed
to take an impressive 60 per cent of the total points in the game, winning 54 out of 80.
The higher-ranked player was expected to win his encounter with Granollers, as he has faced and beaten his fellow Spaniard on two occasions previously. Their first match was in 2010 at Barcelone, where the met on the clay courts
in the round of the last 32. Ferrer defeated Granollers in straight sets, and repeated the performance in the title match of Valencia in the same year. This is his third straight-sets victory over Granollers.
Ferrer has won a total of eleven career titles over the course of his pro career, which began in 2000. He has been ranked as high as World Number 4, and will take on either Mardy Fish of USA or Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentine
in a quarterfinal clash depending on the outcome of their fourth-round match. This is his eighth appearance at the Sony Ericsson Open.
