David Ferrer ousts Santiago Giraldo in the semis – Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Top seeded David Ferrer eased past the Colombian tennis star, Santiago Giraldo, in straight sets at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012 on Friday. He summed up a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the world number 80 to reach the final showdown at this clay court tournament
taking place in Acapulco, Mexico.
The world number six showed his top class at the Fairmont Acapulco Princess and after capitalising on a break opportunity in the last game of both sets, he pocketed the match in one hour and 50-minutes. Both contestants previously faced each other in the
semi-finals of the Auckland ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) event last year and after earning this success, the Spaniard extended his lead in their head-to-head series by 2-0.
"I'm tired tonight, as it was a demanding match. He played very well and it was really close," said the delighted Ferrer after the match. "I am happy about the way things have gone this week and to be in the final once again here in Acapulco."
Bidding for his 14th tour-level title at this ATP World Tour 500 series event, Ferrer entered the opening set with poise. He held his composure and continued plucking remaining serves. The Spaniard converted one out of three break opportunities
in the last game and clinched the opener with a 7-5 score line.
The 29-year-old kept momentum floating into the second set and held his serve in the opening game to go 1-0 up. He clobbered a lower first serve share this time but marvellously availed 14 out of 19 points on it. Ferrer converted a break chance in the last
game to earn the limelight with a 6-4 win.
The Spanish veteran is looking forward to become the second player to grab three titles at this ATP event since Thomas Muster conquered titles from 1993-1996.
Next up for Ferrer is his eighth seeded compatriot, Fernando Verdasco, who triumphed over Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in straight sets to set-up this clash. Verdasco never faced any barrier in keeping his serves and converted three out of seven break
chances to clinch the match with a 6-3, 6-3 score line.
