David Ferrer outclasses Juan Martin Del Potro in the fourth round – Sony Ericsson Open 2012
World number five, David Ferrer of Spain, tumbled over the Argentinean number one, Juan Martin Del Potro, in straight sets at the Sony Ericsson Open 2012 on Tuesday. He penned down a 6-3, 6-3 victory against the 23-year-old to power into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Masters 1000 event held at Key Biscayne.
The 29-year-old showed top class performance to trash Del Potro in their sixth meeting. After overpowering the Argentinean in one hour and 35 minutes, Ferrer not only improved to a 4-2 lifetime against the 11th seed but also booked a place in the final eight in Miami. The contestants previously faced each other the Davis Cup last season where the Spaniard hit back to conquer Del Potro.
Ferrer thundered into the Floridian hard courts and after drawing the first blood in the second game, he leaped to a 3-0 lead. The Spaniard then held his composure and after blocking the lone breakpoint he faced, Ferrer sealed the opener by winning six games to three.
Seeded fifth in this event, Ferrer carried his rhythm from the first set into the final set and kept his serve in the second game to square the scores at 1-1. He got the coveted break in the third game and subsequently went 3-1 up. The veteran then swiped in remaining serves and capitalised on another break chance in the last game to bag the set with a 6-3 win.
Next up for the Spanish number two is the top seed, Novak Djokovic, who edged past Richard Gasquet in straight sets to set-up this date. The Serbian ace lost his serve once but availed three out of 10 break opportunities to seal the match with a 7-5, 6-3 score line.
The world number two, Rafael Nadal, will also feature in the last eight. He got the better of Japan’s Kei Nishikori in straight sets in two hours and 10 minutes. The highly enthusiastic Nadal got broken down twice but capitalised on two break chances in each set to pull out the victory in their fourth outing.
