David Ferrer outlasts Andy Roddick in the third round – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Spain’s fifth ranked player, David Ferrer, continued with his consistent play, as he fought back after losing the opener to oust the three-time former finalist, Andy Roddick of USA, in four sets 2-6, 7-6(8), 6-4, 6-3 in the round
of 32 of the Wimbledon Championships on Saturday.
Roddick dominated in the first set, breaking the Spaniard in the first and third game, capitalising on both of them to move ahead 4-0. Ferrer managed to win just a couple of games and lost it 2-6.
The Spaniard responded in almost similar manner in the second set, as he grabbed opening three games to build a 3-0 lead. However, Roddick broke back in the fifth one and held his subsequent serve to equalise the score at 3-3.
A regular game followed, taking the score to 6-6 and forcing a tie-breaker. Roddick and Ferrer went on equal terms till 8-8 but then Ferrer earned a mini-break and capitalised on it to win 7-6(8).
In the third set, the Spaniard and the American did not lose their serve in the opening six games, levelling the score at 3-3. Ferrer made a strike in the seventh one and made the most of it to win 6-4.
The first half of the fourth set was exactly similar to the previous one, as both players held their serve in the first six games to square it off at 3-3. Though, it was an all-Ferrer show afterwards, as he did not allow his opponent
to win even a single game and captured it 6-3.
It took Ferrer two hours and 38 minutes to come out victorious from a tough encounter.
The Spaniard said, in the most match press conference, “I'm playing very good this season. Today was a tough, tough match. I played very consistent, very solid. I returned very well [in] the third and fourth set.”
Ferrer will take on the 2009 US Open winner and former world number four, Juan Martin Del Potro, in the round of 16.
Commenting on his following match, the Spaniard said, "It's going to be so difficult. To beat him I will have to play very consistent. It is very important my first percentage with my serve. I will have to play very, very good.
I have with great confidence because I won one tournament last week [in Holland] and my performance is good for the second week."
In their six previous meetings on the ATP World Tour, Ferrer enjoys a 4-2 lead over the Argentinean.
