David Ferrer outlasts Tommy Robredo to reach the last four – SkiStar Swedish Open 2012
In an all-Spanish quarter-final encounter, David Ferrer came back in style after dropping the second set to down Tommy Robredo 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, moving to the semi-finals at the SkiStar Swedish Open in Bastad, Sweden on Friday. Ferrer
required two hours and four minutes to topple his countryman in a hard fought contest.
There was no drama at the start of the contest, as Ferrer and Robredo won their serve in the first seven games to take the score to 4-3 in the former’s favour. Ferrer secured breakthrough in the eighth and utilised it to triumph
6-3.
The top seed, Ferrer, delivered a single ace and 61 percent of the first serves, pocketing 15 of the 19 points on them. The 30-year-old did not give any break chance to Robredo and availed the one he created in the opener.
The second set was even more competitive than the first, as both players held their serve in the opening nine games to take the score to 5-4 in Robredo’s favour. Ferrer could not hold when he served to stay in the set at that moment,
going down 4-6.
Robredo banged in one ace and did not commit any double fault, putting in 62 percent of the first serves on target and clinching 20 of the 29 points on them. The 5ft 11in tall also gave a decent performance on the second deliveries
and returns, grabbing nine of the 18 and eight of the 13 points on them respectively.
After losing the second set, Ferrer changed his game and started to play aggressively in the decider. The Spaniard played near flawlessly, as he did not lose even a single game, breaking Robredo three times and consolidating on
all of them to capture it 6-0.
Ferrer had a remarkable conversion rate, as he bagged eight of the 10 first and four of the five second serve points in the match. The world number five also fared brilliantly on the second returns, converting eight of the 10 of
them into points.
The Valencia, Spain resident is slated to face the sixth seed, Grigor Dimitrov, in the semi-finals.
