David Ferrer overpowers Juan Martin Del Potro in 2nd rubber – Davis Cup World Group Final 2011
David Ferrer, Spanish world No.5, went on to play the second rubber of Davis Cup World Group Final 2011 against the mighty Argentine, Juan Martin Del Potro in a nerve wrecking five setter match ending up in more than four hours.
Playing at the Olympic Stadium in Seville, Spain, Ferrer knocked out his rival with a hard hitting comeback winning 6-2, 6-7(2), 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 to give his team a two nil lead over the Argentine team.
Starting off with the rubber, 29-year-old Spaniard took his side to open up the first. Serving out game one, Ferrer took the lead followed by Potro covering up with a double game point winner, 1-1. Carrying on, Ferrer served out
his second service game, broke the lower ranked in game four, 3-1, and served out game five to lead 4-1. The set ended as the Spaniard broke again in game eight finishing off the set, 6-2, and led the match, 1-0.
Moving on, Del Potro struck back in set two as the two played a fiery tiebreaker set. Starting up first, Ferrer knocked out the set opener, however, the Argentine followed every time with a winner. With a breakpoint win for each
of the two, game five and game eight, the two eventually went into a tiebreaker with Ferrer serving first. Overpowering the ruthless Spaniard, Del Potro won the second set surprising Ferrer and levelling up the set scores 1-1 with a 7-6(2) win.
Potro continued serving for the third set start; however, Ferrer was point accurate with his shorts and broke the Argentine world No.11 in game one, 0-1. Extending his lead to 2-nil, Ferrer pocketed game two, however, Del Potro
struck back levelling up as he broke back in game six, 3-3.
Charging on the Spaniard, the mighty Argentine serving out game seven, 4-3, broke the higher ranked rival in game eight, 5-3, and served out game nine, 6-3, to win the third set and led the set scores, 2-1.
Ferrer struck back in game four, as he served out game one, 1-0, broke the Argentine in game four, 3-1, and took the lead. Del Potro did pull back to level up, breaking the Spaniard in game five, 3-2, and serving out game six,
3-3, however, lost his momentum at a crucial stage. Ferrer knocked out his rival in game ten, breaking the Argentine to win the set, 6-4, and levelled up the set scores, 2-2.
With the decider set on its way, veteran Spaniard made the first serve, 1-0, followed by the Argentine levelling up right away, 1-1. Ferrer broke his rival first in game four, 3-1, and then in game six, 5-1, before he fell short
and lost a service game, 5-2. Del Potro could only get back one more winner before Ferrer finished off a long hard fight, 6-3, presenting his country with the second rubber win.
