David Ferrer rolls past Sergiy Stakhovsky into the fourth round – French Open 2011
Spanish number two David Ferrer, ranked 7th in the world, crushed world number 36, Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky in straight sets in the third round of French Open at Roland Garros in Paris on Friday. The Spaniard lost
just five games, winning the match 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 in just an hour and 36 minutes.
Ferrer broke Stakhovsky in the fourth game of the first set and held his next service game, blazing forward to a 4-1 lead. The Spaniard broke again in the sixth game and served out the set at 5-1.
The right-handed had a pretty average first serve percentage as he hit just 58 percent of the first serves but he impressed with the conversion rate, converting a whopping 86 percent of the first serves into points in the opening
set.
Just like the first set, Ferrer thrashed his opponent in the second set, dropping just a single game and breaking the Ukrainian three times to win the set 6-1.
The Spaniard improved his first serve percentage as compared to the opening set, firing 83 percent of the first serves in the second set. The five feet and nine inches tall won 67 percent of the first service points and amazingly
100 percent of the second service points in the second set.
Ferrer damaged Stakhovsky with his fine service returns, winning 55 percent of the receiving points in the second set. The Spaniard did not face any break point on his own serve and capitalised on three of the four break point
opportunities he created in the second set.
With the winning momentum on his side, the 29-year-old broke his opponent in the fourth game, taking a 3-1 lead. Ferrer did not allow the Ukrainian to break back, capitalising on the single break of serve to win the set 6-3.
The Spaniard fired seven winners and committed just three unforced errors in the third set. The right-handed converted 41 percent of the returns into points in the third set. The seventh seed won the only break point he received
in the third set.
Ferrer is slated to meet either world number 9 Gael Monfils of France or qualifier Steve Darcis of Belgium in the fourth round.
