David Ferrer routes Pablo Andujar to book a spot in the semi-final - Abierto Mexicano Telcel 2012
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, cracked down his 26-years-old compatriot, Pablo Andujar, in the quarter-final of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco. He finished him off in just 74 minutes; triumph in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
The previous battle between the two players was contested in April 2008 during the second round battle of Open de Tenis Comunidad Valenciana and Ferrer gobbled up the win in similar fashion in that match as well.
The match commenced with a swap of breakpoints at both ends before the contestants registered serve holds to push the scores at 2-2. Ferrer took advantage of an aggressive start to the match and capitalized with another breakthrough
to his name. He did well to hold his serve in the following game and mounted pressure on his opponent.
Andujar was terribly wrong with his forehand returns in the seventh game and dropped to a trail of 2-5. Top seed Spaniard spared just a single point to his fellow compatriot before registering a comprehensive set triumph.
After facing such a crushing defeat in the opening set, Andujar begin the second set with much more caution and bagged his serve game to manoeuvre the scoreboard to 3-3. Unfortunately for him, his composure didn’t last long enough
and Ferrer won another breakthrough to take a lead. He held his serve to double the grievance of his opponent with scores moving on to 5-3.
A successful serve holds at each ends completed the match proceedings with the top seed marching on to the semi-final stage of the contest. He will take on the likes of Colombian tennis icon, Santiago Giraldo. Both these players
are in the hunt for their first title win in 2012 with Ferrer hot favourite to book a spot in the final of the tournament.
In the major upset of the tournament, eighth seed Fernando Verdasco ousted the second seed Nicolas Almagro, in an all-Spanish quarter-final on Thursday. The match was extended to three-sets and Verdasco bounced back a set down
to power down his compatriot. He will take on the Swiss tennis professional, Stanislas Wawrinka, in the battle for a spot in the final.
