David Ferrer scores easy win over compatriot Feliciano Lopez at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters
Spanish tennis player David Ferrer triumphed at the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters, defeating his second round opponent Feliciano Lopez in straight sets 6-2, 6-0. The match barely lasted 56 minutes, as the Top 10 pro swiftly and ably
ousted his opponent.
Ferrer is currently ranked World Number 6, and seems to be hitting his stride a little late in his career at the age of 29. He has been rising up the rankings in recent months, and has already won two titles so far in 2011.
The Spanish seeded pro raced ahead to a lead in the match, scoring one ace and committing just one double fault in the first set. He also took 86 per cent of his first serve points, and saved the only break point which Lopez was
able to throw at him. Lopez, on the other hand, committed three double faults and scored no aces. He was also broken twice during the set, before David Ferrer took twelve points more than him to take the lead 6-2.
The second set was an even easier one for Ferrer, as he sidelined Feliciano Lopez entirely. His fellow Spaniard had no chance of performing well at this stage of the match, and Ferrer effectively eliminated the possibility of a
tie-breaker within the first few games. Lopez struggled to keep up, and managed to score two aces. However, these were almost immediately negated as he committed three double faults and only took 45 per cent of his first serve points. Ferrer, however, seemed
to be on fire as he barely broke a sweat to score four aces and committed no double faults. In addition to this, he scored a whopping 90 per cent of his first serve points and ended up concluding the match in just six service and return games, with a magnificent
74 per cent of the total points in the set.
All in all, David Ferrer scored five aces during the match and committed just one double fault. In addition to this, he saved the only break point which he faced, while managing to convert five of ten break points against his compatriot.
Lopez, on the other hand, fired off two aces but negated this with six double faults during the match. He could not manage to convert his solitary break point. David Ferrer closed the match in straight sets with 66 per cent of the total points, setting an
impressive score-line of 6-2, 6-0. The head to head score between the two players is now 6-4 to Feliciano Lopez.
David Ferrer will be facing tennis breakthrough star Milos Raonic in the third round of the tournament, later today.
