David Ferrer sends Victor Hanescu off the clay courts of Barcelona in straight sets
Spanish Number 2 David Ferrer recorded another win at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, defeating Victor Hanescu of Romania in straight sets in the third round of the tournament. The Spanish pro, who is seeded fourth at the
tournament, undid Hanescu in easy straights 6-3, 6-2 to win the match and proceed to the quarterfinals of the prestigious ATP World Tour 500 Series event. The match lasted just a little over one hour and five minutes.
Ferrer is currently ranked World Number 6, while Hanescu trails exactly sixty spots behind at World Number 66. Both players are 29 years old, but Ferrer proved that his age is not much of a factor when it comes to winning matches
at this stage. He began the first set quite well, scoring an unbelievable 100 per cent on his first serve points. He remained unbroken throughout the set, and proceeded to break his opponent one time out of four opportunities. The player took six points more
than Hanescu, and scored 56 per cent in the first set to take the lead with a 6-3 score-line.
The second set was even less of an effort for Ferrer, who played his signature baseline game to disarm Hanescu. Ferrer is often known as ‘the Wall’ for his resilience, determination and refusal to give up, but these were characteristics
he did not need to exhibit in this match. He fired off the only ace of the match in the second set, and managed to win another 100 per cent of his first serve points. The Spaniard won a whopping 65 per cent of the second set points to win the match with a
final score-line of 6-3, 6-2.
This is the only match yet played at the tournament in which the winning player has managed to score 100 per cent of the total first serve points. Ferrer also remained unbroken throughout the match. The player will now compete
against Austrian tennis player Jurgen Melzer in the quarterfinals of the clay tournament, after Melzer defeated Spaniard Albert Montanes in the previous round.
