David Ferrer sets up clash with Philipp Kohlschreiber for Auckland title – Tennis News
Defending champion, David Ferrer from Spain, will face off the German number one, Philipp Kohlschreiber, in the title-round at the Heineken Open 2013, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Auckland, New
Zealand. The Spanish number two crippled the French wild card entrant, Gael Monfils, with a breadstick while Kohlschreiber triumphed over Sam Querrey in straight sets to advance.
Seeded top at the ASB Tennis Centre, Ferrer displayed top notch skills to crush Monfils in the fourth encounter. After stealing the show in 49 minutes, Ferrer not only lowered trail in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 1-3 against the former world number
seven.
“For me it is better to have won in two sets and be able to rest for tomorrow,” said the jubilant Ferrer. “It will be fast and flat and lots of power with his serves.”
Ranked fifth in the world, Ferrer drew the first blood in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. After the French held his serve in the fourth game, the Spaniard unleashed his skills again and clicked the opener with a breadstick.
The Spanish veteran carried his rhythm in the proceeding set. He cashed two break chances and leaped to a 5-1 lead. Ferrer held his serve once again and clinched the set with a 6-2 score line.
Ferrer will square off against the second seed, Kohlschreiber, in the title-round. The German overpowered fourth seeded American in straight sets in one hour and 11 minutes to set up this epic encounter. He jolted down a 6-4, 7-6(2) success against the 25-year-old
to progress at this event.  
The German star commented about the final showdown in a courtside interview after achieving the success:
“At the beginning of the season, it's the best thing after a long period of practising, that you achieve some success in the tournaments. It feels great to be here. I really like the conditions. Every match, I've played a little bit better the next day and
I hope to continue in tomorrow's final.”
The 30-year-old currently leads 6-3 in his head-to-head series against the German. He has won in their most recent battles.
