David Ferrer staying positive prior to a big match against Roger Federer – Tennis News
World number five, David Ferrer, dismissed the former US Open Champion, Juan Martin Del Potro, in a gruelling three-setter to clinch his first win in the Association of Tennis Professionals Tour Finals on Tuesday. He defeated the
Argentine tennis ace with the score line of 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The match was dominated by the 30-year-old Spaniard who showed immense courage to grind his body despite a lengthy tour of Paris that yielded the maiden Master title for the Spanish workhorse.
Next up for the fifth seed Spaniard is the second ranked Swiss Maestro, Roger Federer, who is the defending champion of the tournament and looking to register a hat-trick of titles at O2 Arena in London. Federer has already created
a landmark by defeating the eighth seed Serb star, Janko Tipsarevic, earlier on Tuesday. It was his 40th win at year-end finale that took him above the tally of the former world number one, Ivan Lendl, who had 39 wins during his professional tennis
era.
Talking about the contest against Federer, the fifth seed Spaniard said, “I am always positive. I had one day to rest. I am playing with a lot of confidence in my game. I have never beaten Roger. I think I will have to play very
aggressive all the time to have one chance to beat him.”
It might look an easy draw for the 31-year-old Federer but the player who has won seven titles in the season and hasn’t fallen below the quarter-final of any tournament except on three different occurrences can always bid for an
upset. Ferrer has recorded the best season of his career and is upbeat to overpower the Swiss Maestro in the second Round Robin contest on Thursday. It will be interesting to see if the Spanish hero can extend the 11 match winning streak that yielded two back-to-back
titles including Valencia Open and BNP Paribas Masters.
On the other hand, Federer would like to keep a clean sheet at his favourite playing surface, indoor hard courts of O2 arena. The battle promises to provide some fascinating entertainment for the spectators but it all depends on
how Ferrer begins the show.
