David Ferrer steps down from playing 2012 Davis Cup; looks towards the Olympics – Tennis News
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, has also apologized from taking part in the next year Davis Cup tournament. His decision was the second blow for the Spanish fans as earlier Rafael Nadal also announced his non-participation in
the next year Davis Cup. This will leave two spots for the youngsters to fill up and will definitely weaken the Spanish squad.
David Ferrer played an emphatic five-setter match against Juan Martin del Potro that lasted for more than 4 hours. He finally managed to win the match but it seemingly pointed that world number five should step down and allow the
youngsters to show their talent and take up the responsibility. He will turn 30-years-old next year and will enter an age that is considered to be the start of the decline of tennis player as the stamina and game play diminishes due to that aging factor.
He made his debut in the Davis Cup in 2006 and since then he has lost just four out of twenty two encounters that translates into an exceptional winning percentage. Talking to the media representative, he said, “It's going to be
very difficult for the four of us to play together again. This is the end of the party. I have been here for many years and we all look for our own calendar. I'm older. I probably don't have a good physical condition."
This year four participants of the Davis Cup are looking forward to take part in the Olympics next year but it is confirmed that there will be some new faces that will step up and take the responsibility of helping their country
to their sixth Davis Cup title triumph next year.
Talking about the prospects of Olympics 2012, Ferrer said, “We all want to play at the Olympic Games. The Olympics are very important. We want to play in London, and we want to be in good physical condition to represent Spain."
New faces that might be the part of the team may feature world number ten Nicolas Almagro and Spanish number twenty-seven, Marcel Granollers. If it is the case then it will be the first opportunity for Granollers to take part in
the Davis Cup team. Almagro has featured in the Davis Cup matches for Spain on five different occasions but he was never the part of the team for the entire 2011 Davis Cup campaign.
It will definitely be a tough battle for Spanish squad without their tennis aces, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, but at the same time provide golden opportunity for the youngsters like Granollers to take the responsibility and
make for themselves by flabbergasting everyone with their commanding performances.
