David Ferrer takes down Karol Beck; moves into fourth round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
World number six, David Ferrer of Spain, kept his clean record against the Slovakian competitor, Karol Beck, as he defeated him in the third round of the Wimbledon Championships on Saturday.
In the contest being played at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, the Spaniard stood victorious against Beck in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3, taking just two hours and three minutes to move
into the pre-quarter-final stage of the tournament.
It was a pretty one-sided contest, as the Slovakian failed to pose any serious resistance in the match and let Ferrer fly away with a comprehensive victory. The Spaniard has already defeated Beck on two prior occasions, with the
most recent one being at Johannesburg last year, when Ferrer took him down in straight sets 6-1, 7-5, in the round of 32. Ferrer’s victory on Saturday improved his head-to-head record against the Slovakian to 3-0.
Ferrer exhibited his current sublime form, which has already earned him two ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) singles championship titles this year. He has played 41 matches so far this year and has been victorious in 32
of them.
The seventh seed had no trouble in disposing of Beck on Saturday and his powerful serve game proved sufficient to take down the bleak Slovak. Ferrer delivered 70 per cent of his first serve on target and reeled off 43 out of 60
points on it en route to victory.
Beck’s error-ridden game caused his fall in the contest, as the Slovak committed 23 unforced errors, including three double faults to lose the match. He had six opportunities to break the Spanish serve but he converted just one
chance to finish at the losing end.
Ferrer had a steady start to the competition but gathered up pace as the contest progressed. He dropped serve once in the opener but stung two serve breaks to wrap up the set at 6-4, taking 49 minutes of play. The seventh seed
face no real challenge from Beck in the following two sets and cruised his way to victory, getting access to the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championships.
A tough competition awaits Ferrer in the next round of the Grand Slam tournament, as he faces the 12th seed, hard-hitting Frenchman, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, for a place in the quarter-final round. Tsonga powered his way
to the fourth round by defeating Fernando Gonzalez of Chile in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3, in the third round clash of the competition.
