David Ferrer talks about his Davis Cup return against Austria – Tennis News
World number five, David Ferrer, will lead the Spanish squad against the Davis Cup tie against Austria. The tie will be played at this weekend in Orospesa del Mar. The Spanish number two stated the there is no pressure or any extra
obligation on him and he is playing this tournament with his own will.
He stated, “I have a greater obligation and I'm number one. Everyone has their role. When I was Rafa was the same. If I win my party are other good players in the team that can take the tie on. What is clear is that there must
be union of the five, including the captain, to win.”
Ferrer further added, “It will be difficult. It is true that we are at home and that makes us favourites. But it must be demonstrated on the track; going to be tough games; Jurgen Melzer is a great player, I have won on land and
Nico Almagro also. In doubles, for example, are among the best in the world. It will not be an easy tie.”
He will also have a chance to play around his people and probably spend some time with family and friend. He has been playing away from home for quiet sometime and it is a golden opportunity for Ferrer to make a name for him; help
his country to a win and spend time with his loved ones.
The Spaniard has an emphatic record of 22-3 this season. He has won three titles this season already that includes the season-opener at Auckland, the Heineken Open, Copa Claro in Buenos Aires and Abierto Mexicano Telcel that was
contested in Acapulco. Ferrer registered the hat-trick of titles in Acapulco with the triumph this year. He is in tremendous form having lost just three matches so far.
He was cruising in the year’s first Grand Slam tournament, the Australian Open, before the reigning world number one, Novak Djokovic, squeezed him out of the competition after a hard fought three-setter. His trip to Indian Wells
was not impressive as he went down to the Uzbek tennis ace, Denis Istomin, in the third round of the tournament but made an impact in the Sony Ericsson Open. He reached the quarter-finals of the tournament before bowing out to the same man he lost in Melbourne.
Seeing his terrific form, Spain’s team is definitely going to have a major boost with his participation and Austria will have their work cut out in order to win the tie.
