David Ferrer thrashes Andy Roddick in second rubber – Davis Cup 2011: USA vs ESP QF
Playing the second rubber of the 2011 Davis Cup quarterfinal between USA and Spain, David Ferrer destroyed former top ten, Andy Roddick in straight sets. The match was played of premium indoor hard court at Frank Erwin Center, Austin, Texas. The Spaniards had already won the first rubber of the Davis Cup 2011 quarter-final as Feliciano Lopez battled past the top ranked local, Mardy Fish in five sets. However, the all time head-to-head record between the two teams has yet to be settled as the Spaniards lead 1-0 in the quarter-final.
Playing the first match of the tour, the world No.6 seemed comfortable playing in unfavourable conditions as he ended the 2nd rubber match with ease. Though the match seemed unpredictable at the start it ended with smiles on the Spanish fans.
The Frank Erwin Center was filled up with cheering fans as the match started with Ferrer serving first. The first set made it clear that the both players would not give up easily. Leading to a tiebreaker set, David Ferrer finally pulled it off with an amazing forehand and won the first set 6-7(9). Although Ferrer won fewer points on first serve, he managed to pull off 11 points out of 18 in his second serves.
The second set had somewhat a similar angle. The difference was that it did not lead to a tiebreaker. The World No. 6 made it much easier for himself this time. Winning 38 points statically, Ferrer made it look like a piece of cake. The under pressure American could not do anything, finally losing the second set as well. However, Andy managed to pull off 5 games only ending the score at 5-7. The Spaniard, after the second set, led the match by 2 sets to zero and went on to the decider set.
The third set was like a last punch for the kill. Winning 92 percent points on first serves, the Spaniard cruised his way to win the final set 6-3 giving the home fans another shocker. Ferrer won 29 points in the set making 120 to 105 points in total. The world No.6 had a total of 43 winners including 28 forehand winners and 6 backhands.
The match lasted for 2 hours and 46 minutes. It was rather a misery put upon the home fans for the second time in the quarter-final tie between the two teams making it 2-0 for the Spaniards against USA. The teams have still three rubbers to play. The problem is that if Americans cannot hold their own in their own backyard? They’d better find another home ground to make their mark.
