David Ferrer thrashes Santiago Gonzales to progress to the Abierto Mexicano Telcel quarterfinals
David Ferrer, World No.6 and top seed, progressed easily into the quarterfinals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel at Acapulco on Thursday, the 24th of February. The 28-year-old Spaniard, recent Australian Open semi-finalist, dominated local Santiago
Gonzales in a completely one-sided contest. The final score-line of 6-2, 6-2 lived up to expectations, as no one had counted on the 261th ranked Mexican to give the Spaniard a hard time.
This is Ferrer’s first tournament since the Australian Open and he shows no signs of running out of the form he exhibited at that particular event. In his previous match here, he had completely overrun Romanian qualifier Adrian Ungur.
The tournament is the final event of the Golden Swing through latin America. As such, it is held on clay; Ferrer’s favorite surface. The Spaniard’s strong baseline play is a trademark of all clay court specialists and his particular style looks like it’ll
pay dividends at this event as well.
Santiago Gonzales is also a clay courter at heart. Mexico born and trained, he is currently 261st in the world. A wildcard entry, he overcame another Mexican wildcard in the first round when he beat Daniel Garza in straight sets 6-2, 7-6. Gonzales
must have been ruing his luck at drawing with Ferrer though, considering the Spaniard is the best player in contention at the event.
The first set was a breeze for the Spaniard, despite only getting 42 per cent of his first serves in. However, he did manage to get 7 points out of his 8 serves once.
His opponent delivered 71 per cent of his first serves correctly, but was atrocious on his second serve. The Mexican only won 29 per cent of the points on his second serve, resulting in 6 breaking opportunities for the World No. 6; Ferrer converted four
and took the set easily.
The second set was an almost exact repeat of the first one, except Ferrer was even more dominant. He served much better and completely crippled the Gonzales second serve. The 28-year-old won an amazing 6 out of 8 points returning on the second serve and
created 4 break points. He capitalized twice to again take the set 6-2.
The Spaniard looks to be in deadly form and even though his real test will come late in the tournament, he looks set to come out on top. Ferrer next faces the Argentinean, Juan Monaco in the quarter-final.
