David Ferrer thrashes Tomas Berdych in the fourth rubber – Davis Cup WG Final 2012
World number five, David Ferrer, kept alive Spanish hopes by dismissing Czech Republic’s number one tennis player, Tomas Berdych, in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 7-5 in the fourth match of the Davis Cup final in Prague, Czech Republic.
Spain was trailing 1-2 at the start of the final day and it was a must win situation for Ferrer. The Spanish star rose to the occasion and gave some amazing display of tennis, downing the world number six in a one sided match.
Ferrer made a flying start, capturing opening three games to race to a 3-0 lead. The Spaniard hit another blow to the Czech player in the seventh and capitalised on the double break to seal it 6-2.
The Spanish spearhead, Ferrer, made an exactly similar start in the second set, as he won first three games to build a 3-0 advantage. The 30-year-old held his entire serves till the end to grab it 6-3.
Unlike the first two sets, Ferrer and Berdych held their serve in the first two games to equalise the score at 1-1. The Spaniard attained a breakthrough in the third and won his subsequent serve to move ahead 3-1. However, Berdych
made one last try, hitting back in the eighth to even out the proceedings at 4-4. The Czech player had the backing of home crowd and it looked like he would take the encounter to a fourth set but that did not turn out to be true, as he got broken again in
the 11th and failed to bounce back this time, going down 5-7.
Ferrer said during the post match press conference, “It’s very difficult to beat Tomas in three sets but I played one of the best matches of my career in Davis Cup. I tried to focus on every point, to do my game. I was playing
with confidence. I’m very happy because it’s very important for me and my team.”
He added, “He (Berdych) played a lot of matches, he played five sets with Nicolas and four sets yesterday. I played very focused, very aggressive, I started really good and maybe that was the key.”
Berdych did not hesitate in praising the player to whom he lost his first Davis Cup match of this year. The Czech stated, “Ferrer played an excellent game and I was always way behind him.”
Czech Republic’s Radek Stepanek will take on Nicolas Almagro of Spain in the fifth and final match of the tie.
