David Ferrer topples Jerzy Janowicz to capture the title – BNP Paribas Masters 2012
World number five, David Ferrer, grabbed his maiden ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title by beating Polish qualifier, Jerzy Janowicz, in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 in the final of BNP Paribas Masters in Paris.
Ferrer stood strong against Janowicz, who had made a number of upsets on his way to the title match, and proved that one can achieve everything with hard work and dedication.
The Spaniard has become the first player other than the top four in the world i.e. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal to clinch an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 title in the last two years. Robin Soderling
was the last player outside the ‘Big 4’ to win a Masters Series event, as he had won the Paris title in 2010.
Ferrer and Janowicz made a steady start in the final, as both of them held their serve in the first nine games to take the score to 5-4 in favour of the former. However, the Polish player faltered under pressure when it mattered
most, losing his serve in the 10th to do down 4-6.
Janowicz drew the first blood in the second set, as he broke Ferrer in the third game to move ahead 2-1 but the Spanish star hit back immediately to level the proceedings at 2-2. The Spaniard grabbed three more in a row afterwards,
gaining a 5-2 lead. Ferrer made sure that his golden opportunity is not lost, as he made the most of his advantage to win 6-3.
The Spanish number two was extremely happy after the win, as he came after three losses in the final of ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events. Luck was also in favour of Ferrer, as none among the top four players was on the other
side of the net in the final.
The 30-year-old said, "It was a dream for me to win here in Paris-Bercy. I had never won a Masters 1000 [title], and I took my chance, because it was not Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic. I played very
good these [past] two weeks. It is very important because it was the best season of my career, and I will try to improve my game."
He added, "This was his fifth match; this was my eighth match. I was really tired. I was actually exhausted almost. I'm only human, and I'm still happy about this final.”
Ferrer has received 1000 ATP Ranking points after this win and has closed the gap with fourth ranked Nadal.
