David Ferrer topples Nicolas Almagro to grab the title – Copa Claro 2012
Top seed, David Ferrer, rallied to beat the defending champion, Nicolas Almagro, in three sets, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the final of the Copa Claro in Buenos Aires on Sunday. Ferrer took one hour and 54 minutes to overcome Almagro
and won his second title of the season.
Almagro drew the first blood by breaking Ferrer in the third game of the contest and consolidating on it to claim a 3-1 lead. The Spaniard made the most of this advantage and served out the set at 5-4.
The right-hander dominated with his first deliveries. He hit four aces and won 17 of the 20 first serve points in the opener. Almagro failed to win many points on Ferrer’s first deliveries but targeted the second ones, clinching
six of the ten of them.
Ferrer came charging into the second set, capturing first three games to go ahead 3-0. He didn’t lose his serve throughout and bagged it 6-3.
Both players delivered a couple of aces and one double fault. The difference between these two was the break point conversion, as Ferrer capitalised on one of the four he received but Almagro couldn’t make use of the one
he got in the second set.
Ferrer continued to dominate in the decider. The Spaniard broke Almagro in the third and fifth game and held all of his serves to grab a 5-1 lead. Almagro was unable to bounce back from this position, losing the decider 2-6.
Ranked sixth in the world, Ferrer, returned quite well in the matchup, winning seven of the 11 second ones. In comparison, Almagro succeeded in winning just two of the nine in the final set.
A jubilant Ferrer said, "This is a very nice and happy moment. To win here is very special as it is a tournament that I really like. At the beginning, I was limited by Nicolas. He served well, hit stronger, and was better
than me. I knew that I had to improve. I ended very stable and Nicolas had more ups and downs."
The Spaniard added, "In the second set, I had chances but after, it all became more and more difficult. But I never lost confidence in my game. I think that David was a fair winner and he has proven this by the huge level
of game he showed during the week."
Ferrer has won all the nine meetings with Almagro. The Spaniard grabbed his 13thtitle.
