David Ferrer thrashes Fernando Verdasco to complete the hat-trick of titles – Abierto Mexicano 2012
Defending champion, David Ferrer, outfoxed the 27th ranked Spaniard, Fernando Verdasco, in the title match of Abierto Mexicano Telcel to claim the title. The top seed participant overpowered the eighth seed compatriot
in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Ferrer finished off Verdasco in 69 minutes, sparing just four games for the Spaniard. However, Verdasco paired up with David Marrero to win the doubles final of the tournament later in the day. Ferrer has been undefeated in Mexico
for the past three years and stays champion for another year to come. It has been a majestic performance from the 29-years-old who will turn 30 next month.
World number six kicked off the match in great style, winning the opening three games that included the first breakthrough of the match as well. It was never an easy task for the vulnerable Verdasco to overcome the consistent Ferrer.
The eighth seed registered his first successful serve hold in the fourth game but couldn’t repeat that for the rest of the set; losing serve game in the sixth game that gave a majestic lead of 5-1 to his opponent. Ferrer gobbled
up the win with a thumping cross-court winner in the following game.
Nothing changed for Verdasco in the second set as well. He was rock bottomed throughout the encounter; finding it hard to place the returns at his will. He went under the cosh in the opening serve game of the second set but somehow
saved a couple of breakpoints to register a serve hold. He was again pressurized in his following serve game but saved another couple of breakpoints to keep the scores together.
During the third serve game, the eighth seed Spaniard couldn’t stop the defending champion, who wasted not in a mood to spare him. Ferrer clubbed the first breakthrough of the set and doubled it with another thumping breakthrough
in the seventh game. A successful serve hold did the job for the champion of Acapulco.
A hat-trick of titles for the Spaniard will definitely boost his morale and urge him to play well. He might be aging but his stamina and enthusiasm to play lengthy encounters has not depleted a single bit. He is a treat to watch
when he is on song.
In the women’s category, the Israeli contestant, Sara Errani, dumped the hot favourite Italian, Flavia Pennetta, in a taxing three-setter to win the title. She also won the title in the doubles category as well; teaming up with
Roberta Vinci to oust the fellow finalists, Lourdes Dominguez-Lino and Arantxa Parra-Santonja.
