David Ferrer trounces Igor Sijsling to enter semis – Proton Malaysian Open 2012
Top seed, David Ferrer, got the better of the Dutch contender, Igor Sijsling, after warding off early scare at the Proton Malaysian Open 2012 on Friday. He hit back to formulate a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory against the world number 97 and secured a spot in the
semi-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 Series event taking place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Ranked five in the world, Ferrer showed top notch performance to overpower the Dutchman. He made a drastic entry and lost his serve in the opening game. Apart from losing the opening set, the Spaniard remained focused and carved out the victory in two hours
and three minutes. As a result, the veteran improved to a 3-0 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series against Falla and progressed into the last four.
The Spanish veteran commented about his performance in a post match press conference, “I think I played good today.”
The 25-year-old thundered into the Putra Indoor Stadium. He drew the first blood in the opening game and took the initial lead. The Dutch held his composure and smoothly bagged his entire serves with conviction. He blocked the only breakpoint he faced and
cashed in the lone break chance, eventually sealing the opener with a 6-4 win.
Ferrer south his rhythm in the proceeding set. He got the desiderated break in the second game and jumped to a 3-0 lead. Apart from losing his edge in the seventh game, the Spaniard broke his rival’s serve again and eventually pulled out the equaliser with
a 6-3 score line.
The 30-year-old maintained consistency in his game in the final set. Despite losing his serve once, Ferrer cashed in both break chances and clinched the decider with a 6-4 score line.
Next in queue for the Spaniard is the seventh seed, Julien Benneteau.
Ferrer commented about his next match-up:
“It will be a tough match against Julien as he is very good on hard court and had a good game today.”
Benneteau swiped his entire serves without facing any barrier and broke Alejandro Falla’s serve four times to formulate a 6-2, 6-2 success in just under an hour. He dominated throughout the duel and consequently set up this date.
