David Ferrer trounces Jurgen Melzer to lead Spain into semis – Davis Cup WG 2012
David Ferrer edged past Jurgen Melzer in straight sets to take Spain into the semi-finals at the Davis Cup World Group 2012 on Sunday. He formulated a 7-5, 6-3, 6-3 victory against the world number 21 at the Marina d’Or in Castellon, Spain.
After the end of the second day at this International event, Spain led Austria by 2-1. Marcel Granollers and Marc Lopez lost the doubles rubber against the Austrian tandem, Alexander Peya and Oliver Marach. However, Ferrer unveiled his true colours and blasted
past the Austrian number one, eventually booking a final four place for his country.
“I’m really happy to have won both my matches and that Spain are in the semifinals again,” said the beaming Spaniard in a court-side interview. “I played with confidence and in the important moments I think I played better than him.”
The 30-year-old Spaniard assertively stepped on the red clay courts and held his opening serve after warding off the breakpoint. He then maintained consistency in his game and plucked remaining serves. Ferrer got the breakthrough in the last game and pocketed
the opener by winning seven games to five.
Ferrer kept momentum rolling in the second set and after earning the coveted break in the second game, he jumped to a 3-0 lead. Regardless of losing his edge in the seventh game, the Spaniard capitalised on another break chance in the very next game and
clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 6th in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Ferrer played convincingly in the final set. He capitalised on his break chance in the seventh game and eventually pulled out the set with a
6-3 win.
All in all, Ferrer dominated throughout the match and after earning this success, he improved to 14-0 in singles matches at the Davis Cup on clay.
The left-handed Austrian gave his all and played brilliant tennis. He got back in game in the end of the second set but was ultimately underplayed by Ferrer.
"It was more fun to be out there today to be honest," the Austrian commented after the match. "Ferrer is a tough competitor, a great clay court player and he just proved why he is No. 5 in the world. I felt like I had a high level of tennis today but it
just wasn't enough.
In the second reverse singles rubber, Nicolas Almagro, overpowered Peya with a 7-5, 7-5 success and clobbered a 4-1 victory for Spain.
