David Ferrer trounces Simone Bolelli to reach quarters – Skistar Swedish Open 2012
Top seeded David Ferrer made a winning start at the Skistar Swedish Open 2012 after triumphing over the Italian contestant, Simone Bolelli, in straight sets on Wednesday. He jolted down a 6-4, 6-3 success against the world number 128 to cruise into the quarter-finals at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place in Bastad, Sweden.
The world number five, Ferrer, stayed on the right path to capture his fifth year-to-date title after tumbling the Monte Carlo resident in their fourth meeting. After earning the limelight in one hour and 14 minutes, Ferrer improved to a 4-0 record in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the 26-year-old and booked a spot in the final eight.
Ferrer thundered into the Swedish dirt and reeled off the opening four games in a row before the Italian could break back. Despite throwing away his lead in the seventh game, the Spaniard remained calm and carved out the opener with a 6-4 win after cashing in another break chance in the last game.
The 30-year-old carried his momentum in the following set and smoothly swiped his entire serves without facing any breakpoints. He recorded a perfect winning rate on his first serve share and cashed in lone break chance in the sixth game to clinch the set with a 6-3 score line.
Summing up the Spaniard’s performance, Ferrer failed to block both breakpoints he faced but capitalised on four out of the seven break chances to record this victory. He produced a poor first serve share of 55 per cent as compared to his rival’s 76 per cent and brilliantly marked 23 out of 28 points on it.
Ferrer will next face his wildcard compatriot, Tommy Robredo, who crippled Brazil’s Joao Souza with a breadstick to set up this clash.
The fourth seed, Jarkko Nieminen, became casualty of the day. He was underplayed by the Czech challenger, Jan Hajek, with a breadstick in almost one and a half hour-long venture. The Finn cashed in his lone break opportunity but brushed off only six out of 10 breakpoints he came across, eventually suffering a 1-6, 6-7(2) loss.
