David Ferrer undoes Jurgen Melzer in straight sets at Barcelona Open
Spanish tennis player and Top Ten pro David Ferrer scored an easy victory in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell in Spain, defeating his opponent Jurgen Melzer in straight sets. The match was an easy one
for Ferrer, who has been seeded fourth at the tournament. He did not face much of a challenge, and sent his Austrian opponent home in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
The Spaniard has been in great form lately, and was expected to score a win despite the fact that Melzer has also recorded some great victories lately, such as his last-week defeat of former World Number 1, Roger Federer. Melzer
could not produce great results against his opponent Ferrer, despite the fact that the Spaniard committed many errors.
The first set consisted of no aces for David Ferrer, although he managed to score one double fault less than Melzer. The player remained unbroken through this half of the match, and went on to convert one of three break points
against Ferrer successfully. He quickly stacked up a 4-1 lead in the first set, before Melzer managed to push himself to three games. The Austrian player faced considerable trouble due to his opponent’s superb shots, and eventually lost the first set 6-3.
The second set was more or the less the same, although Ferrer committed two double faults and was broken once by Melzer. The Spaniard kept his cool, and delivered three break point wins to the Austrian player. however, Melzer managed
to take the lead twice at 2-1, and 3-2. He was largely unsuccessful, and David Ferrer took 56 per cent of the total points played in the set to win the match 6-3, 6-3. It was an easy match for the Spanish pro, who recently reached the 2011 Monte Carlo Masters
final before losing to Rafael Nadal.
Ferrer will be taking on Nicolas Almagro, a fellow Spaniard and clay court expert, in one of the two semi-finals of the tournament tomorrow. The other semi-final will be between Nadal and Croatia’s Ivan Dodig.
