David Ferrer will encounter Tomas Berdych in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship – Tennis News
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, believes that the upcoming Mubadala World Tennis Championship will surely serve as a good practising session. He is paired with the Czech rival, Tomas Berdych, on 27th December 2012
at the Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi.
In an interview with the media, Ferrer said, “Personally I am very happy to finish the year in the world’s top five again and I hope to carry my form through to Abu Dhabi. Playing Tomas is always tough; I’m at five in the world
and he’s at six. We’ve played nine times and it’s always close, so the crowd in Abu Dhabi will be in for a memorable night on day one. Getting to the final last year was a great way to start the new season ahead of the Australian Open. I hope I can go one
better this year and I’ll be giving my all.”
Ranked fifth in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Ferrer posted remarkable performances this year and secured the Spanish Player of the Year award due to the absence of the
King of Clay, Rafael Nadal.
The higher ranked Spanish challenger attained his triumph after a close match at the Malaysian Open 2010. The duo faced each other again in the round robin of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals 2011 in London. The two waged a close
battle against one other and the Czech consolidated his three-set win, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the end.
Ferrer made it until the quarter-finals of the Australian Open held at the Melbourne Park earlier this year. After a three-set match, he was defeated by the Serbian professional, Novak Djokovic. He made it to the semi-finals of
the French Open but was unable to break the monopoly of Nadal.
At the All-England Lawn Tennis Club, he received a four-set loss at the hands of the British number one, Andy Murray. Although his contests against the world number six, Berdych, has never been easy but he is still eager to win
the exhibition trophy this month.
The 30-year-old professional is optimistic regarding his success in the tournament and believes that he can even rally past the reigning world number one, Djokovic. He will make his third appearance in the Abu Dhabi since the year
2010.
