David Ferrer will square off against Del Potro at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals – Tennis News
World number five, David Ferrer, will take on the sixth seeded Juan Martin Del Potro in his first round robin match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Tuesday. The Spaniard is coming off conquering his maiden Masters title at the BNP Paribas Masters
while Del Potro lost to Michael Llodra in third round from Paris Masters before entering this event.
Seeded fourth in this tournament, Ferrer halted the Polish qualifier, Jerzy Janowicz, in straight sets before entering this circuit finale which is held in London, England. The jubilant Spaniard is on a 10-match killing spree after retiring from his opening
match against Yen-Hsun Lu with stomach virus.
He high-spiritedly entered the Valencia Open, an ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 Series event held in Valencia, Spain. Ferrer eased past his opponents to secure a spot in the final round. He required three sets to outsmart the Ukrainian
number one, Alexandr Dolgopolov, and capture the title.
The 30-year-old maintained his intensity at the Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy. He triumphed over sixth seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets before setting up date with the Polish booming star in the title-round. Ferrer needed 88 minutes to formulate
a 6-4, 6-3 victory against the qualifier. He dropped his serve once but cashed three out of seven break chances to prevail. As a result, the high flying Spaniard grabbed his seventh year-to-date title and gained 1000 South African Airways ATP Ranking points.
"It was a dream for me to win here in Paris-Bercy," said the ecstatic Ferrer after conquering Paris Masters. "I had never won a Masters 1000 [title], and I took my chance, because it was not Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic. I played
very good these [past] two weeks. It is very important because it was the best season of my career, and I will try to improve my game."
The 24-year-old on the other hand went on an 11-match tear after bowing out to second seed Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of US Open. He made a comeback at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna after suffering a wrist injury. The Argentine returned with a
splash as he dumped his entire rivals and ultimately captured the title.
Del Potro carried his rhythm at the Swiss Indoors, an ATP World Tour 500 Series event held in Basel. He unveiled his true colours in it and cruised into the final showdown. The Argentine held his composure against top seed Roger Federer, who was the defending
champion here, and eventually carved out the victory in two hours and 44 minutes.
The Argentinean number one kept momentum rolling at the Paris Masters but bowed out to the local wild card entrant, Llodra, in third round. He was underplayed in one hour and nine minutes after failing to seek any break opportunity. Del Potro was broken
twice and eventually endured a 4-6, 3-6 loss.
Both stars have battled each other seven times before with Ferrer leading the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 5-2 against the Argentine. The players last fought each other at the Wimbledon Championship earlier this circuit and the Spaniard is eyeing to carry
his momentum. He is expected to formulate a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory against the Tandil native.
