David Ferrer will take on Tomas Berdych in fourth rubber – Davis Cup WG Final
Spanish number two, David Ferrer, will face off the Czech top ranked star, Tomas Berdych, in the fourth rubber at the Davis Cup World Group title-round. He eased past Radek Stepanek in straight sets in the opening rubber on Friday. The local star on the
other hand stomped over Nicolas Almagro in a five-set thriller to level the scores by 1-1 at this prestigious event.
The Spanish veteran is enjoying a spectacular season this circuit as he grabbed seven year-to-date titles and reached far in several tournaments including all four Grand Slams. With Spain’s number one Rafael Nadal ruled out from tennis since July after Wimbledon,
Ferrer played a pivotal role in taking his nation to the final showdown.
In his last match at the O2 Arena in Prague, Ferrer plonked the world number 37 in less than three hours despite facing a pessimist crowd. He recorded a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory after hammering 48 winners and ruling throughout the battle.
Ranked fifth in the South African Airways ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour Rankings, Ferrer stated in an on-court interview after triumphing over Stepanek:
“I played very good. I'm very happy with my game. He played really good when he played back. It's not easy to play Radek on this type of court, because it's really fast. I received really good. Maybe this was the key.”
The world number six, Berdych on the other hand needed five sets to level the scores by 1-1 for Czech Republic. He notched up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-3 victory against the Spanish number three, Almagro, in three hours and 58 minutes.
Berdych beamed in a post match press conference after taking down the Spaniard:
“It's our first point and that's all. I'm extremely happy for that. To play with this crowd on my back is an amazing feeling. I was enjoying everything on court... I think that the human body is a really strong engine. I will give everything I have. I just
need to get ready again. Tomorrow is another day.”
The 27-year-old accompanied Ferrer at the year-ending championship, Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, in London. In addition to this, he grabbed two titles this season and is undefeated in his nine Davis Cup matches this circuit.
Both tennis stars will face each other for the ninth time with Ferrer leading the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head Series by 5-3 against the Monte Carlo resident. However, Berdych has the honour of grabbing the victory in their last encounter at the Barclays ATP World
Tour Finals last season. He bounced back to formulate a 3-6, 7-5, 6-1 score line.
Berdych is looking forward to lead his nation to grab their first title since 1980. He is expected to clobber a 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(3), 6-3 victory against the 30-year-old with support from his home crowd. The Czech needs to stay focus and concentrate on his returns
in order to overpower the high flying Ferrer.
