David Ferrer wipes off Jarkko Nieminen to clear the opening round at Roland Garros
Excellent start for the world number seven, David Ferrer of Spain, as he blew away the unseeded opponent, Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the opening round of the French Open in Paris, France, on Sunday. Ferrer proved too good for
his bleak opponent and wrapped up the contest in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-1, in merely 85 minutes of play to advance to the second round of Roland Garros.
The hard-hitting Ferrer was absolutely ballistic in the game and simply outclassed the Finn opponent in the contest to advance to the next stage of the Grand Slam event. The in-form Spaniard gave no chances to Nieminen and simply
devastated him in straight sets to register his 29th victory of the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season.
Both men have already faced each other this year and are currently having a head-to-head record of 1-1 prior to the Roland Garros encounter. The last meeting between these two was held at Rotterdam where Nieminen stood victorious
in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, but Ferrer avenged his defeat in the most authoritative manner in Paris.
Ferrer took off the game with his typical aggression, getting early hold of the game by exerting immense pressure upon the Finn. The Spaniard faced no real challenge in overwhelming Nieminen, who failed to register even a single
serve break in the entire contest. Ferrer crafted 10 break opportunities and he converted half of them to reach victory.
Nieminen was led down by his large number of unforced errors in the game, which amounted to 27, in contrast to Ferrer’s 16. The world number seven was very precise in executing his strokes and secured 29 winners in the game, along
with four fiery aces as well.
The Spaniard struck just one serve break to get the commanding position in the opening set and got one up in the contest by sealing the opener at 6-3. The following set was a complete replication of the first one, except Ferrer
stinging two serve breaks to reach 6-3 and get 2-0 in the game.
Nieminen had nothing left in him in the third set and proved to be an easy target for Ferrer. The seventh seed clouted two serve breaks to conclude victory at 6-1 and will face Julien Benneteau of France in the second round. Benneteau
defeated Rui Machado of Portugal 4-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-0, in the opening round of the French Open.
