David Ferriol, Rob Burrow, Andy Coley suspended by RFL – Rugby League news
David Ferriol of Catalan Dragons, Rob Burrow of Leeds, and Andy Coley of Warriors, have received bans for different violations during the ongoing 2011 Super League.
The Super League season for the Catalan Dragons has been good as compared to the last season. They have been playing fairly well and have lost two matches out of the thirteen after their rocky start in March. As a result of the ban on Ferriol, he will miss
three matches of the season, and will be unable to play the match against Leeds on Sunday.
The Catalan Dragon’s Prop, Ferriol, was banned by the Disciplinary Committee of the Rugby Football League (RFL) after a win of 34-28 over Bradford Bulls, on Saturday, July 2. This disciplinary action was taken against him because of his high tackle on Bradford
Bull’s second rower, James Donaldson. Initially, the match referee had taken out Ferriol from the game after he had spotted the illegal tackle. The Disciplinary Committee picked up the offence and proceeded with their hearing of the matter after sufficient
evidence was present of wrongdoing.
The committee suspended Ferriol on a Grade C offence under law 15.1 (b) which defines misconduct on the field. Under this law, a player’s behaviour is questionable during a tackle. The law according to ‘The Australian rugby league laws of the game’ states
that “when effecting or attempting to effect a tackle makes contact with the head or neck of an opponent intentionally, recklessly or carelessly, is a definition of misconduct”.
The RFL disciplinary committee regarded Ferriol’s tackle as a Grade C offense since there was a possibility of serious injury due to the player’s high tackle. In addition, the committee also fined the player £300.
Leeds scrum half, Rob Burrow, will also be missing the match on Sunday against the Catalans. Burrow received a ban by the disciplinary committee, after his tackle on Ryan Hoffman of Wigan. His offence, unlike Ferriol’s tackle was a Grade B offence. The ruling
body showed leniency in his ruling and suspended the player for one match only, with a fine of £300.
Similarly, Andy Coley of the Warriors was banned for a single match along with a fine of £300, on fighting during a game against Leeds. Other than Coley, the offense of fighting during a match, by Jacob Emmitt of Castleford and Michael Cooper of Warrington,
also came under the eye of the disciplinary committee. However, this misconduct did not result in suspension but instead the committee decided to fine them both with £500.
Despite the bans, the performance of the team was not hindered. Catalan Dragons easily managed to win the match against Leeds on Sunday, ranking them above the Leeds, in the Super League tables.
