David Freese, Lance Berkman guide St. Louis Cardinals to 10-9 win in Game 6 – MLB Update
The Texas Rangers entered Game 6 of the World Series with an aim of winning their first ever crown, but the St. Louis Cardinals, influenced by David Freese and Lance Berkman, pulled the game back after going down five times to win 10-9 in the 11th
inning at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri on Thursday, October 27.
The Cardinals eradicated a two-run lead in the ninth inning and then again in the tenth inning to keep themselves in contention for a possible Game 7. Freese, after winning National League Championship Series’ Most Valuable Player Award, produced a walk-off
homer down centre-field in the 11th inning to seal the encounter. Earlier, Freese drove in a two-out triple in the ninth inning to draw level with the Rangers and re-inject momentum in the line-up.
"We fought back," Freese said. "We made some mistakes early on, but the way we've all been playing lately, you expect to come back like this. This is just a good feeling, and I'm pumped we're playing tomorrow."
Cardinals’ manager Tony La Russa agreed to this notion and added that the game was simply unbelievable. He continued that the team has the mentality to never quit trying and that greatly helped in defeating the Rangers in Game 6.
On the contrary, the Rangers did not make their chances count and it seemed that the team’s mentality was to take it to Game 7 and then win it from there. However, of the last 13 Major League teams that have managed to win Game 6 at home to push the series
to Game 7, 12 have went on to win Game 7 and thus bag the World Series.
National League comeback player of the year, Lance Berkman, played a vital role in getting the Cardinals through. He said, "I've played in several pretty good postseason games, but this one takes the cake. I think you had a little bit of everything. I'm
just glad to be part of it."
Nevertheless, it was a ‘Deep Freese’ hit in the last inning that sealed the game for the Redbirds. Both teams are now just a win away from bagging the World Series. The Rangers have not lost two consecutive games since September and the Cardinals have history
on their side. It will be interesting to see if the NL Wild Card entrants manage to become World Champions.
