David Freese on top as St. Louis Cardinals become World Champions – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman and Most Valuable Player of the World Series, David Freese, was overly delighted after he helped his team to a 6-2 win over the Texas Rangers in Game 7 of the Fall Classic on Friday, October 28 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis,
Missouri.
The Cardinals could have lost the World Series after Game 6, had it not been for Freese in the 11th inning. The 28-year-old slugger held his nerves to smack a walk-off homer down centre-field to give the Cardinals a 10-9 win and level the series
at three-each. Starting from where he left in Game 6, Freese drove in a two-run double in the first inning to become the only player in the history of Major League Baseball to hit more than 20 RBIs in a single postseason.
Freese, a native of St. Louis, rose to glory after Game 6 of the National League Championship Series, when he named as MVP for his invaluable contributions against Milwaukee Brewers in the pennant race. Freese’s contribution not only won his team a pennant
for the first time since 2006, but made way for the Cardinals to go down in history as the tenth Wild Card team to qualify for the World Series.
Nevertheless, the youngster attributed manager Tony La Russa for injecting impetus into the team just at the right time and appreciated the ‘never give up’ approach adopted by the manager. He said, “He's got a great idea of what it takes to not only win
a game but to get to this point, and for me to come to the big leagues and play under him right out of the gate, I couldn't ask for anything more.”
Answering a question pertaining to his at-bat in the first inning, Freese agreed to the notion that the two-run double was the turning point of the game because it usually gets difficult to chase down a lead when it stays on for a few innings.
The youngster did not go overboard with emotions and asserted that the team fought till the last out in the ninth inning. He stated that big teams cannot be treated effortlessly, especially when the World Championship is at stake.
