David Freese readying swings for the regular season - MLB News
The St. Louis Cardinals hitter David Freese said on Tuesday, March 13, that he is readying his swings for next month, as the regular season nears. The statement came after he had another homer on Tuesday that he hit against the New York Mets.
This was his second homer in as many days, establishing the evidence of his ever strengthening grip. David Freese will constitute an important part of the Cardinals offence in the days to come due largely to conspicuous absence of Albert Pujols.
Tuesday’s performance against the Mets is a step towards it. The Grapefruit League has brought to fore the power that this player possesses, ever ready to put it on display.
"I'm just trying to get my swing ready for April," he said afterward. "I had some good swings the last couple of days, and I'm just going to try and keep that going."
Freese also shed some light on how he has constantly used hands and arms to generate power in hitting. But his focus now, so he says, should be on legs.
“You have to hit with your legs," said Freese, "Hopefully, my legs keep progressing and I stay healthy and I can get back to putting up some power numbers. The position where I play, the position in the lineup where I'm going to be, I have to drive in runs. Hitting home runs, I'm not too worried about that.”
As a third baseman, Freese is not primarily tasked, and not much expected, to go for homers. Nonetheless, as the reports have recently indicated, the player will have an important role to play given the absence of likes of Rafael Furcal and Lance Berkman.
Once the two return, the Cardinals offence will be ever stronger. This brings a good news for the Cardinals; the team that is looking for a repetition of the World Series success that they scored against the Texas Rangers the past year.
It will now be interesting to see how he goes forward to achieve what is expected from him as the Redbirds prepare themselves for the regular season.
