David Freese sparks as St. Louis Cardinals defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 – MLB Update
St. Louis Cardinals’ third baseman, David Freese had a remarkable day with the bat as he scored one run with two RBIs and went 2-for-4 with an average of .306 in the Cardinals’ 6-4 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park, Pittsburgh on July 22.
The Cardinals stepped on the gas in the very first inning and took a 4-0 lead. Albert Pujols struck a two run homer (411 feet) towards right-centre and Jon Jay posted a single run. Freese also hit a two-run homer (361 feet) to right-field and Lance Berkman
scored one run to end the four-run campaign at the top of the first inning.
On the other hand, the Pirates’ batters managed to get only two runs in the second inning and reduced their lead 4-2. Ronny Cedeno singled off left-field and Garrett Jones added the first run for the Pirates while the second run was taken by Cedeno when
Paul Maholm drove a single-run shot towards centre-field.
The Cardinals led off 5-2 during the third inning when Chris Carpenter singled to right-centre and Yadier Molina contributed a single run. Nick Punto moved to second base at the end of third inning. The pitchers upheld in the fourth and fifth inning and
did not give up a single run.
Carpenter was little bit shaky with the ball as he gave up four runs on 10 hits with four earned runs and pitched his eight innings with an ERA of 3.73. He allowed only one walk and had four strike-outs on his 108 pitches.
In the sixth inning, the Pirates’ batters further cut their deficit 5-4 by blasting two runs. Andrew McCutchen and Lyle Overbay added two runs when Jones singled to left-field. Later on, Jones got out to second base at the bottom of the sixth inning. Pujols
singled to left-field while Jay flied out to centre-field and Matt Holliday grounded out to first base in the seventh inning without giving any run to the Cardinals.
Molina struck a one-run homer (408 feet) towards centre-field to give the Cardinals a 6-4 lead, at the top of the eighth inning. In the ninth inning, Cedeno flied out to centre-field and Matt Diaz struck-out swinging. With this dominating victory, the Cardinals
took a 1-0 lead in a three-game series played at PNC Park.
