David Frost wins the MCB Tour Championship despite performing poorly on day three
David Frost survived the final round scare to record a one-stroke victory at the European Seniors Tour’s season-ending MCB Tour Championship. The tournament was being played at Constance Belle Mare Plage in Mauritius.
It was the second Seniors Tour victory of his career, as Frost also won the 2011 Mauritius Commercial Bank Open after defeating Roger Chapman in the playoffs.
Entering the final round in Mauritius, the South African held a massive four-stroke lead over his competitors, thanks to his rounds of 64 and 67 on day one and two, respectively.
Thereafter, the 53-year-old failed to keep the momentum going into the final round and faltered for a two-over par 74.
He got off to a flying start by carding birdies on two of the first three holes that he played. He then lost control over his game and conceded a triple bogey on the sixth hole to reach the turn in one-over.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him make a number of mistakes that forced him to suffer a couple of bogeys along with a double bogey.
Entering the last hole, he was sharing the lead with the 2011 Order of Merit winner Peter Fowler, at a 10-under par overall score.
Therefore, he desperately needed a birdie putt on the 18th hole to avoid the sudden-death playoffs.
Frost’s second shot flew over the water hazard and landed on the green, providing him a chance for an eagle putt. His try for the eagle slid past the cup, before he tapped in the ball for a birdie.
At the end of the day, he found himself finishing one stroke better than Fowler and Barry Lane.
“That was a bit closer than I was hoping for,” he admitted. “It just shows you in this game, you have never won. The human factor came into play today. I hit one bad drive and then after that you feel the emotions. I’d been telling everyone it was a three day golf tournament, not two”.
He added, “I played OK in spurts today but I let the guys back into the tournament. Luckily I played a great shot on the last hole and it was a relief to get the win in the end”.
